Recently, there have been plenty of arguments
of whether to operate the fifth and sixth nuclear plants or not. While there are pros and cons of the energy,
the responses to the decision are quiet conflicting.
In effect, Nuclear power has some really
impressive merits and safety supports.
First of all, it is cheap and efficient.
Unlike some other clean power, such as wind power, solar power……etc, are
not only inefficient but also expensive, which is not useful in our
industrialized country. Secondly, it’s
generating process produces no chemical pollutants and is simple to operate.
For example, coal-burning power sends tons of pollutants in the air, but
nuclear power doesn’t. Some research even
suggests that nuclear costs less death than fuel burning. And finally, according to the ENSREG, safety
standard used by Taiwan’s nuclear power plant is actually high and we also
cooperate with China as well as USA to strengthen our nuclear safety.
To
view in the opposing way, it is also a threat to Taiwan. First, Taiwan is on the Pacific Rim Seismic
Belt, which means earthquake and tsunami happen all the time in Taiwan. Just like the Fukushima disaster, we also
risk facing the same problem. Second, we
have high popularity density in Taiwan, and an explosion of a nuclear plant can
nearly destroy half of our country.
Third, the waste is a heavy burden to us. Since we don’t have enough space to live, not
to mention a place for those radiation wastes.
Plus, the wastes are also threatening Lan-Yu citizens’ health. Last, the using of nuclear power can lead to
developing nuclear weapons or using by terrorists.
I wouldn’t say that I totally disagree
with nuclear power. Without the power,
Taiwan might have trouble developing its industry and shall force those
factories tomove to other country, which will lead to economy problems. Despite of this, we still have to take the
health and safety of Taiwan citizens into concern, especially those in Lan-Yu.
