When it comes to the most significant sports
competition, there is no doubt that the Olympic Games are at the top of the
list. The Games started in a
cold-blooded ancient time when wars were happening all over the world. The Olympics was created in efforts to end
the wars. So, even now, the Olympic
Games are not only about competing with others, but they also promote peace,
equality, and good sportsmanship.
First of all, the Olympics has always
played an important role in promoting peace.
In the ancient Greek period, King Iphitos decided to put an end to the
wars. He achieved this by holding the
first Olympic Games. King Iphitos
declared that no wars were to be fought seven days before, during and after the
Games. This was called the Olympic
Truce. Up till this day, the Host Nation
still restates the Olympic Truce in order to promote peace. And the Truce Wall has become a
representative symbol of the Olympics.
Secondly, the Olympic Games also promote
equality. The 2008 Beijing Olympics slogan
was, “One world, one dream.” That means
no matter what your race or nationality is, everyone is welcome to participate
in the Games. Not only so, each winner
gets to see their flag rise in the award ceremony. This brings honor to their country, whether
the champion is from a powerful nation or not.
In this spirit of the Games, everyone is equal.
Finally, the Olympic Games promote good
sportsmanship. Despite the differences between the countries that don’t see eye
to eye, they can forgive each other through sports. Athletes set aside their differences and show
their sportsmanship when competing. In
addition, they attend the Olympic Games and represent their country, so
naturally they would behave in a way that reflects kindly on their country. That is why good sportsmanship is often seen at
the Olympic Games.
Since the Olympics was held, it has always been an important
game around the world. It has brought
peace to the once cruel world, hoping the world could be a big family and work
together. With the technology today, everyone
is able to take part in the Games, even if you are at home in front of your
television. In conclusion, not only does
the Olympics provide great athletic competition, it also promotes peace, equality,
and good sportsmanship.
